'The Almost Nearly Perfect People' by Michael Booth
Although it's a bit dated (this book was written in 2014 before the migrant crisis really picked up in Europe), The Almost Nearly Perfect People is one of the most interesting books I've read to provide nuance on five countries in a tucked-away corner of the world that everyone else has come to regard as nearly perfect.
Michael Booth is a Briton married to a Danish woman and spent several years living in Denmark and traveling to the various Nordic countries (Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Finland, and Sweden). He was particularly curious to read all the articles describing Denmark as the happiest country on Earth, consistently scoring the top spot on several metrics of happiness and satisfaction with life. In fact, he soon realized that all five Nordic countries seem to constantly score at the very top of nearly every metric of human development, from income and GDP per capita to economic equality and opportunity, from social mobility and social cohesion to trust in government and education standards. It seemed like the Nordics had achieved a perfect utopia.

And yet as someone who lived in Denmark, Booth found it to be quite bizarre that Danes would be the happiest in the world, since he considered Denmark to be a gray, cold land with shy, conformist people, sky-high taxes (the highest in the world, he claims), miserable weather, and pretty placidly dull life compared to France or Italy or London or New York. So Booth decided to explore a book that leveled a bit more nuance, highlighting a lot of the issues faced by the Nordics that the world often ignores.

Before delving any further, it should be noted that Booth states (and I agree with him on this) that, at the end of the day, it is undeniable that the Nordics have an outstanding performance in many metrics of human development, and they probably truly do Paragon ntfs core_keygen.dmg. provide the highest standard of living on this planet. However, the highest does not mean fully perfect, and there are issues that need to be confronted and addressed to keep a realistic perspective on the region. The weeknd trilogy album download.
The book is divided into five chapters, one for each country. In each one, Booth uses that country to explain an issue that he sees as particularly pressing in that country while also being broadly present in the other four. Since he has the most experience in Denmark, the chapter on Denmark is significantly longer than the other four, and takes up about a third of the book.
In 'Denmark,' Booth explores the stifling culture of conformity and average-ness, where individuality and exceptionalism are seen as elitist and annoying and people are expected to be placid, unassuming, parsimonious, and modest. In doing so, though, he argues that a lot of the drive and individuality is sucked away. He comments on the 'hygge' culture of Denmark ('hygge' means, broadly, 'cozy') and how, to keep things 'cozy' the Danes tend to avoid any discussion that will 'rock the boat,' meaning that most socialization follows surprisingly strict social codes that keep things calm but also a bit dull, sweeping problems under the rug. There is a much more thorough discussion of high taxation, conformity, and the loss of drive (Danes, I was surprised to learn, are actually some of the worst performing students in Europe, at least when this book was released). https://belains.weebly.com/messages-app-for-mac-sms.html.
In 'Norway,' Booth addresses right-wing extremism as these once-homogeneous countries begin to diversify, citing especially the right-wing terror attacks of 22 July in Norway. The homogeneity of these countries made it easy for them to install a social democracy but, as racism rears its ugly head, makes Norwegians (and other Nordics) cautious about sharing this social democracy with newcomers who they perceive as 'outsiders.' He also talks about Norway's fabulous oil wealth, and the hypocrisy behind a supposedly eco-friendly and progressive people having a huge carbon footprint per capita and getting filthy rich off of selling filthy fossil fuels.
'Finland' deals mostly with the rampant alcohol and drug abuse problems of the region, which seem especially pronounced in Finland, as well as the Cold War era politics, where Finland (and many of its Nordic neighbors) shared a perilously close border with Russia. 'Sweden' discusses the country which receives perhaps the most scathing review in Booth's book. https://bosspodcast.weebly.com/hearts-of-iron-4-black-ice-download.html. Among the issues are, again, the startlingly conformist culture, heavy state intervention in the lives of individuals, and problems with integrating and accepting the growing number of migrants.
'Iceland' is curious because Booth himself admits Iceland is something of an anomaly compared to the others. Jade elephant slot machine free download. He discusses Iceland's financial crisis of 2008, the superstitious nature of Icelanders (especially compared to their very skeptical Nordic brethren), and the influence of American culture in Iceland.

Booth's tone is pretty light and humorous, which can be fun but gets old at times and makes it hard to take some of his analyses seriously. But overall, I really enjoyed this book. As a very progressive person, I have to admit I often bought into the myth of the Scandinavian utopia. My view, like Booth's, is that the area still has an excellent system that provides its citizens an extraordinary quality of life and level of development, but the Nordic model definitely shouldn't be taken as a be-all, end-all cure for society's ills. Even in the almost nearly perfect part of the world, there are a lot of problems.
